Egira hiemalis

A few of our noctuid moths, such as Scoliopteryx libatrix and Eupsilia tristigmata, overwinter as adult insects and can be encountered in January. Of those noctuids that overwinter as pupae, those of the genus Egira are among the earliest to emerge. The example shown in this photograph was found on February 9, when few other moths were around. The caterpillar feeds on Douglas Fir.
