Lithophane contenta
This moth is rare in Canada as a whole, but its caterpillar can be
found in July and August on Garry Oaks Quercus garryana in the Victoria
area. I do not know if carnivorous habits have been recorded before in the genus
Lithophane, although caterpillar-eating is known in the neighbouring
genus Eupsilia. The photograph shows a caterpillar
of Lithophane contenta eating a hapless caterpillar of Triphosa
haesitata. I do not blame this at all on overcrowding in the rearing
cage, which I am always careful to avoid, so I expect it occurs regularly in
the wild.
