This moth flew into my apartment from outside, so I have no personal experience of its life history, but it is apparently well known in forestry circles as the “Western Black-headed Budworm”. The caterpillar can cause defoliation of various conifers. Several tortricids resemble bird droppings, and this may be one of them, but it is also using the defence of “disruptive coloration” – two well-demarcated contrasting colours that have the effect of breaking up the shape of the moth.
