  GRACILLARIIDAE

Caloptilia sanguinella

There are many similar species of these “tripod” moths of the genus Caloptilia. Identification is a bit of a problem. Many of them are restricted to particular foodplants, and it is because the moth illustrated was on Garry Oak that I believe it is very probably C. sanguinella. Caloptilia caterpillars are initially leaf miners, but they emerge from inside the leaf to pupate outside. The first photograph shows the edge of an oak leaf folded over; the cocoon and pupa are inside the fold.
