Pseudaletia unipuncta
The adult moth is occasionally known as the White-speck Moth, but the caterpillar, which is far better known, is the Army Worm. In earlier books it is to be found under Leucania unipuncta or Mythimna unipuncta. Occasional huge outbreaks of the caterpillar occur, and when they have devastated all the crops in one area they move in unison as a huge army of caterpillars seeking new pastures. I have never actually seen the caterpillar, the moth that is shown having flown into my living room one evening, and I have not heard of any large outbreaks in recent years on southern Vancouver Island.
