The caterpillar feeds on alder, willow, cherry or Hardhack. Like many noctuid caterpillars, it has green and brown forms, although the earlier instars are usually green. Regardless of the basic colour, the details of the darker spots seem to be constant, in particular the row of dark dorsal spots, each at an intersegmental ring.
