Gluphisia severa

The caterpillar of this fairly common species is to be found on the leaves of poplars in August. Like some other prominents, the caterpillar stretches closely against the eaten margin of the leaf that it is feeding upon, which makes it quite difficult to see. Winter is spent in a slight cocoon against the bark of the tree, and the adult moth emerges in April.
