 SPHINGIDAE

Paonias excaecatus

This is an uncommon hawk moth in our area. It is some years since I have seen it, and it may not survive in the area for much longer. The caterpillar looks somewhat similar to that of Smerinthus cerisyi, but its skin is markedly granular, it has irregular reddish spots on it, and it is to be found on rosaceous shrubs such as Ocean Spray Holodiscus discolor, Hardhack Spiraea douglasii and Ninebark Physocarpus capitatum.
