  NYMPHALIDAE

Euphydryas editha

The race that occurs (or occurred) on Vancouver Island is (or was) the subspecies taylori, which some lepidopterists describe as a full species. It must now be described as endangered, and it probably no longer occurs on Vancouver Island and may be on its way to extinction. For this reason I thought it worthwhile to publish my only photograph of the insect, reared from a caterpillar found on Plantago on the Saanich Peninsula, Vancouver Island, in the early 1960s, even though a photograph of a butterfly perched on a hand may not be as aesthetically pleasing as I would have liked.
