I see this moth distressingly often in my apartment, and it is far commoner than the true clothes moths (Tineidae). Although it is not closely related to the superficially similar true clothes moths, it probably does damage clothes in a similar fashion, although I have not personally been able to verify this. I have never found the caterpillar, and I believe most of the moths I find inside have flown in from the outside, although I cannot say that it is a welcome guest.
