Phyllocnistis populiella

This moth, whose total length is less than 2 mm, is one of the smallest moths in this series of photographs, yet the leaf mines on Aspen are
readily and easily recognizable. In spite of its small size, it is capable of severe damage during occasional outbreaks when every leaf
of an Aspen is disfigured with a Phyllocnistis leaf mine, although I have never seen such a severe outbreak here on Vancouver Island. In the first photograph, you can see that a small part of the leaf edge has been folded over, just to the left of the petiole. That is where the pupa of the moth is hidden.
