ERIOCRANIIDAE
Eriocrania semipurpurella

During summer, many of the leaves of Ocean Spray Holodiscus discolor are brown and withered. This is largely the work of the leaf-mining caterpillar of this primitive moth. The adult moth can be found in March, just as the young buds are beginning to open. Just tap one or two twigs and several of these moths, smaller than a house fly, will fly up. Under a magnifying glass they can be seen to be one of the more magnificent wonders of the natural world, for at certain angles their wings shine with a deep royal purple flecked with gold.
