Fantasea Field Trip

Thank you for signing up for the VNHS mini-pelagic trip.

Meet at 9:15 at the dock behind and below the red heritage building at 1002 Wharf St. You can reach the dock from both water level parking lots on either side of this building. THIS IS CHANGED FROM WHERE THE BOAT TIED UP IN PREVIOUS YEARS.

There is pay parking nearby, or you can try your luck at the meters on the surrounding streets. Last time I checked, meter parking was free on Sundays, but please read the meter instructions in case that has changed. The boat will leave the dock at 9:30 am, with a planned return at 2:30 pm

For more information on our chartered boat, see fantaseacharters.com. This will give you a good idea of the facilities.

Dress warmly, preferably in layers to accommodate changes in the weather (not that ever happens) ;-). Gloves and hats are recommended. Rain gear is a good idea. Bring handwarmers if you have them.

The boat has canvas covers for the upper deck, but rain can still work its way in through some gaps. Sensible shoes/boots with rubber soles are a good idea. If you can handle going up and down a ladder, you can get to the upper deck. Otherwise there is excellent viewing (and warmth) on the lower deck.

Bring food and drink for the day. Coffee, tea and stronger beverages are available on board for a small fee, but you are welcome to bring your own. Gravol or other sea-sickness medication is at your own discretion!

Don’t forget your binoculars, field guides and cameras!

We want to attract the gulls and other seabirds. If you have old food to discard (baked goods, cereal and the like), bring it along to toss overboard. The technical term is chumming. We’ll be doing it with whatever we have on hand.

We have priced this trip at VNHS’s costs. If for some reason you are not able to go, you will be responsible to find a substitute to buy your space on the boat. We cannot issue refunds unless we are able to fill your space or unless the charter is cancelled. We may have a name or two on a waitlist, but those folks will need as much notice as possible.

The location of the birds and marine mammals will dictate the exact route, but typically we head towards Race Rocks.

Have a great trip!
